An extremely likeable artist, Beth Thornley's music is steeped in the singer-songwriter tradition, all the while remaining focused on unassuming indie rock. This album's opening track, "I Will Lie," is reason enough to pick up this half-hour long college radio feast. It's a lush but hard-rocking track, as infectious as they come, and the album's real gem. Thornley never pretends to do anything particularly revolutionary on here, but her sheer songwriting talent and unassumingly vocal charm should win over most listeners. It'll take some luck to actually break through in the overcrowded musical niche in which she's working, but her apparent willingness to settle down as a songwriter for other (presumably less talented) artists means you'll probably hear one or more of her songs later on, anyway. Might as well start here.
