Hobex
Back in the 90s
Slash
Depending on your taste, they may not get an A for pleasantry, but Hobex undeniably gets an A for effort - hell, they're laying down music in genres that have a few cobwebs on them. A little bit of Motown and a little post-disco, Back in the 90s is anything BUT 90s. There's lots of funk and groove, plenty of scratchy and in-the-middle-of-funk-and-porn guitar effects, and a somewhat airy but incredibly appropriate vocalist with plenty of harmonization. Songs are mostly love songs with soul, and every minute of this album is a strangely vague time warp to a time either before rock-n-roll or as a direct opposition to. An entertaining but not particularly engaging listen, Hobex isn't something advisable for the strictly rock lover. But, for those disco-ball nights when you want something slightly more romantic than your Bay City Rollers or Average White Band albums, Hobex is your answer.
