This post-major-label EP is a testament to a period of reorganization for the Jesus Lizard and offers a sound more distinct and original than prior releases. With the leaving of original drummer Mac McNeilly, the Lizard's trademark haltered and heavy rhythms have stepped aside, giving the group a more fluid sound. Although longtime Jesus Lizard fans may be hesitant to grab a JL release with McNeilly's absence, it may be that sacrifices had to have been made in order to give the band a necessary facelift after entering the bruising arena of major labels.
This reorganization period also leaves Jesus Lizard shopping for a new producer. This five song EP "tries out" no less than three producers, including John Cale and presents a variety of Lizard sounds such as the dirgish, percussion-absent (`boo-hoo') instrumental "Valentine."
Even though McNeilly will be greatly missed, this EP is a different kind of jewel in the expansive crown of the Jesus Lizard catalog. It is refreshing to see Yow an' Co. back in the world of independents and I can't wait to see what's next on the horizon.
