Like Sonic Youth before them, the Hurricane Lamps don't so much discard careful conventional tunings as accept the fact that sometimes things sound better when the strings are out of whack. Melodies strain under the spell of the off-key, but the Hurricane Lamps carry it off without dropping a single cue.
