Improv Legend Derek Bailey Passes Away

from the Silence dept.

Improvisational/experimental guitar virtuoso passed away on Christmas Day, in his newly adopted home of Barcelona. At 75, Bailey was still tirelessly pushing the boundaries of music and sound, both by himself and in a dizzying array of collaborations with the likes of Cecil Taylor, Ruins and Pat Metheny. Said Bailey of his enduring appeal to open-minded types of all ages, "The kids don't mind whatever it is these days... they seem to be able to take anything. Which is great to somebody like me. I find it very comfortable. In an uncomfortable sort of way." He will be missed.

Japanese Crushes Self in Pi Record

A 59-year-old man from Chiba Prefecture recited pi, or the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, from memory to 83,431 decimal places from Friday to Saturday to set an unofficial new world record.

Montreal Swings Like A Pendulum

In a landmark decision on Dec, 21, the Supreme Court of Canada lifted a ban on swingers' clubs, ruling that group sex among consenting adults is neither prostitution nor a threat to society.

Pete Doherty Pledges to Not Not Not Keep Using Crack

Showing a remarkable talent for obliviousness, BBC Newsnight invited drug kingpin and sometime musician Pete Doherty back on their program, one year later, for another hour of uncomfortable confessions and general wasted inelegance. Teenaged shut-ins cooed and the rest of the world squirmed as Doherty pledged to kick drugs and get back together with Kate Moss (har), poo-pooing reports that he planned to sell intimate details of their courtship to tabloid papers. Besides, she already did that for Vanity Fair.
