Janette Carter of Carter Family Dies
from the Circles Unbroken dept.
Janette Carter, the last remaining child of A.P. and Sara Carter, passed away Sunday at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN. She was 82.
Janette Carter, a leader in founding Carter Fold in Hiltons, VA, turned a one-time Country Grocery Store location in Poor Valley, Virginia into am 880 seat Appalachian amphitheater and a Carter Family Museum that now draws more than 50,000 attendees yearly. Carter Fold serves to preserve a style of mountain music that otherwise has few regular outlets.
Johnny Cash, who married Janette's first cousin June Carter Cash, regularly played there in unannounced performances. Cash played his last live public performance at Carter Fold.
Jannette Carter's daughter Rita Forrester will keep Carter Fold in operation.
