Pink Floyd founding member and reclusive artist Syd Barrett, 60, has passed away in his Cambridgeshire home of natural causes. Barrett is best known as the guiding light of Pink Floyd during their early, psychedelic years, gaining praise for his eccentric songcraft and incendiary guitar playing. He left the band, amidst rumors of a drug-induced breakdown, and retreated to the Cambridge countryside to live with his family. He emerged from his self-imposed exile to deliver a number of compelling and bizarre solo albums, among them "Barrett" and the "Madcap Laughs," before he simply disappeared altogether. From this silence, a massive cult of fans grew and waited, for a word, a song, anything, trying to puzzle meaning from a few disparate sightings and blurry photographs. But Syd Barrett no longer owed anyone anything, and lived out the rest of his days in relative peace. He will be missed.
