Snow Donuts

from the Just plain weird dept.

No, it's not a promotion for Winchell's or Krispy Kreme. "This is no joke. We did not build it," said Mike Stanford, an avalanche-control expert with the state Department of Transportation (WSDOT). "They are a natural occurrence in nature." Stanford found frozen doughnuts of snow on the top of Washington Pass in the North Cascades this week when he was doing avalanche-control work. He said it's only the second time in his 30 years of working in the snow that he's seen anything like it. The larger of the snow rollers, as they are commonly called, was about 24 inches tall, he said, large enough for him to put his head through the hole. Stanford said snow rollers form when there is a hard layer on the snow, covered by several more inches of dense snow. "Then you add a steep slope and a trigger such as a clump of snow falling out of a tree or off of a rock face."

R2-D2 Now Works For The Post Office

from the How the mighty have fallen dept.

Star Wars robot R2-D2 took up his position on a Hollywood street Friday, a few yards from where Darth Vader and Chewbacca lookalikes prowl for photo-ops with tourists. The R2-D2 in question is one of around 400 mailboxes that are being revamped with special packaging to make them look like the famous chirruping robot from the science-fiction film, which is marking its 30th anniversary this year. The mailboxes is situated near the famous Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood -- one of the first cinemas to screen Star Wars 30 years ago.

The Who ends concert during first song

from the And what about Keith? dept.

TAMPA -- Fans of the Who left an amphitheater disappointed after lead singer Roger Daltrey walked off the stage during the band's first song. Several minutes after Daltrey's departure, guitarist Pete Townshend announced that the show had been canceled. He told the crowd that Daltrey had bronchitis. "I just talked to Roger and he can barely speak," Townshend said. "I tried to get him to come out here, but he's really, really sick." The 9,000 people at Tuesday night's show seemed disappointed but cheered when Townshend told them the concert would be made up March 25.
